The benefits of interning as a student

Finding your future job

An internship presents a valuable opportunity for students to explore a career path and gain professional working experience. It provides hands-on experience and development within a specific field, enabling students to assess if a particular career choice suits them. Internships are typically offered by organizations for a short duration.

Summer internships often require a commitment of forty hours a week and last between ten to twelve weeks. While some internships offer payment, others do not.

However, even unpaid internships provide opportunities for making connections and acquiring new skills that can pave the way for future employment, whether full-time or part-time.

Unpaid internships primarily focus on learning experiences rather than performing job duties. Although volunteering without pay may not provide immediate financial compensation, it enhances one’s resume and can lead to valuable networking opportunities.

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, students with paid internships have a higher hiring rate (63%) compared to those in unpaid programs (37%). Additionally, some unpaid internships may offer college credits, providing benefits in different areas.

Tasks and responsibilities may differ between paid and unpaid interns, with unpaid interns typically having more flexible hours and lighter workloads. Regardless of payment status, interns often benefit from mentorship and guidance from managers, similar to the support provided in educational settings.

Both paid and unpaid internships offer valuable experiences and benefits, each with its own unique advantages. Ultimately, participating in an internship related to one’s desired career field is a beneficial opportunity. Now, it’s time to select and apply for internships—whether paid or unpaid—and determine which option aligns best with personal goals and aspirations.
